From time to time, I will introduce you to friends and family and today I want you to meet some who I love very much and who has always been part of my life. One cool Thanksgiving weekend ever so many years ago, my parents brought home their first born child and only daughter who was named Libby after a dear friend. As they tell it, I was the perfect baby, sleeping cooing, and crawled contentedly until I was confident enough to walk across the room without falling. From there I twirled and haven’t stopped since.
The first person to hold me or talk to me besides my parents was Mary Alice. She was there when they brought me home from the hospital and she’s been part of my life ever since. She taught me to love the kitchen as I would cling to her apron and beat on the pots with wooden spoons as she cooked. Oh my, devil’s food cake and crispy fried chicken are real comfort food for me because of her. When I was old enough, she taught me some of her kitchen secrets, but hers was always better because she cooked everything with her own special love.
She took care of my brother and me and taught us so much about life and people and just how simple it really is – just live by the golden rule. I don’t ever remember her fussing at us much less spanking us and Lord knows I’m sure we needed it. Mary Alice ruled us with a kind gentle heart and I know now how lucky we were to grow up with her guidance. My mother laughs that we were such brats that she and my father had to have help to keep us in line. Mary Alice laughs louder and tells everyone to this day that I’m her baby and can do no wrong. How wonderful to have someone who has always loved you in spite of everything and everyone! My prayer for you is that you have a Mary Alice to love in your life – it just doesn’t get any better.

Oh Libby...Yes, I had a Mary Alice! Her name was Pearl and she loved my family and we loved her!! She was the one who taught me how to cook! One Thanksgiving morning she came over to make sure we had a wonderful meal. I came home from my first apartment and sat at the kitchen table and wrote down everything she did! I still have those cards and pull them out every Thanksgiving. What a wonderful treasure they are to me now! You are so lucky to still have her in your life!!! Have a great weekend!...hugs...Debbie
Libby, what a blessing you had growing up, your parents AND Miss Mary Alice! She looks like such a kind, wise woman. Just beautiful.

What a beautiful tribute to a lovely lady. Everyone needs someone to offer unconditional love and what a precious gift Mary Alice is to you. Thanks for sharing this wonderful story. Kathy
What a gift and a treasue. I had an "Artimease" in my life as a child and my children knew her as "Mease" or the title she loved even more---"Momease". My daughter will not have a grandmother at her upcoming wedding but if I can get her here, Mease will be seated front and center!!
Hi Libby, thanks for visiting my blog the other day. Quilting is my new love and that quilt is a pattern from a quilt-along I was in. I'm so glad you liked it. How blessed you are to have Ms.Mary Alice in your life. I can just see the love you have for her in the pic you shared. Tootles for now!
Hello Libby...
Well I just couldn't help but comment on this endearing post about your dear friend Mary Alice! What a blessing to have such a special lady in your life!!! At the end of your post you remarked that you hoped that we all had a Mary Alice in our lives...well my friend, my husband & family were blessed to have such a special lady too and her name was also Mary Alice...my husband's mother! She passed away a number of years ago and she is dearly missed! I could hardly believe my eyes when I read that name...Mary Alice!!!
Warmest wishes,
Chari
