Tennessean James K. Polk, 11th president of the United States, and his wife Sarah were not connoisseurs of fine food, preferring hearty Southern cooking. Country Ham, Hickory Nut Cake and Scratch Backs were among their favorite fare.
Fancy food, card playing, drinking, dancing and other amusements were taboo during the Polk Administration. Sarah selected a White House China that many deem among the most beautiful in the Presidential collection and was responsible for the tradition of “Hail to the Chief” being played routinely
This plate from the Polk White House China features the shield of the United States. It has 27 stars for the 27 states in the union in 1846. The motto of the United States, E Pluribus Unum, which means “out of many, one,” is on the banner across the shield. Each plate had a different flower in the center. Many think this is the most beautiful of all the White House china. Date: 1846Creator: Edouard D. Honore, Paris
And did you know that there are official lyrics to the song?
Hail to the Chief we have chosen for the nation,
Hail to the Chief! We salute him, one and all.
Hail to the Chief, as we pledge co-operation
In proud fulfillment of a great, noble call.
Yours is the aim to make this grand country grander,
This you will do, That's our strong, firm belief.
Hail to the one we selected as commander,
Hail to the President! Hail to the Chief!

His is one of the prettiest patterns, isn't it? However, I do love both of the patterns that Mrs. Bush chose!...Debbie
