The orchids in this gorgeous altar arrangement at First United Methodist Church in Jackson TN were grown by Roberta Price with help from her husband, Dr. Jim Price. The Prices are two of the most compassionate and giving souls in our community. The parents of three children, I have known them since their two sons were best friends growing up with my younger brother. A greenhouse for Roberta’s mother started the hobby numerous years ago and now it houses some of the most spectacular species.
Since his retirement, Dr. Price has honed his skills in taking care of these beautiful and delicate flowers and spends time with his wife in the greenhouse. There are over 30,000 orchid varieties which grow on every continent except Antarctica. The orchid is the largest family of flowering plants with the smallest growing beneath the leaf to protect it from the rain in its native Costa Rican rain forest. Its flowers are only one-hundredth of an inch in diameter. The entire plant is only about a quarter of an inch tall. The largest orchid can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and can produce up to 10,000 flowers on a mature plant in nature. These orchids are 10 feet tall with leaves along the full length.

I have never been successful with orchids. My mother either and she has a major green thumb.
Libby, I am just a regular "southern girl" that cooks sometimes. But I tell you I am hooked on my spinach salad. Baby Spinach, manderin oranges, some pecan halves and Newmans Own Light Raspberry & Walnut salad dressing..You probably know all about this. But wanted to share. I eat it almost everyday.
Oh those are beautiful flowers forgot to add that :-)
Libby,
the flowers are specatular!
I really enjoyed this post! I love orchids and every year the Natural History Museum has a huge show of them - I think I may have to go and photograph them!
How gorgeous, Libby... I have been a lifelong Methodist--although I'm involved in the Episcopal Church now with my hubby. I worked in the UMC for many, many years.
I was a Diaconal Minister for many years --but then got my master's degree and became a Permanent Deacon. My 'calling' was in Ch. Education and not as clergy --but I loved it all, and truly gave my life to the church for many, many years.
After meeting George, WOW---did my life change. I retired in 2003---and haven't missed my ministry AT ALL... I love the little Episcopal Church we are involved in now.. I love the liturgy.
Thanks for sharing the orchids.
Happy Easter.
Hugs,
Betsy
What a gorgeous bouquet, and a fitting gift to glorify God on Easter. Thanks so much for sharing this photo, it is lovely to see the flowers, and to know of these two giving people.
Happy Easter!

Beautiful! I started to buy (and try keeping alive!) some orchids today but since it's such a beautiful flower, didn't want to have it die at my hands.
I hope we all remember to thank the tireless women (and men) who do altar arrangements each week. Happy Easter!
Just Beautiful! I love orchids. They have to be the most elegant flower. Have a great Easter Sunday!
Beautiful orchids! Have a fabulous Easter!
When it comes to the orchid, almost all of us thinking about some spectacular flowers that you can see in florarii, greenhouses or reports on National Geographic. If you say Lady Slippers or heroic blood, one part of interlocuitori know that they are orchids.
If you say poroinic, butter cow, gemanarita, bee, pribonic, balls off, hatred, bull, trinji, Gârbea, mosisoare, burzisor, strawberries and add that they are orchids, might be seen as someone who invents a name for impress the audience. All these plants, but there are orchids.
