Rotogravure Etiquette, Hats On or Off

Perhaps we should all brush up on etiquette before wearing our Easter bonnets. Even though not as many hats are seen in the rotogravure, many still wear them on special occasions such as Easter or to the Derby. And by the way that funny sounding word you’ve sung for years in Irving Berlin’s classic “Easter Parade” is the section of the newspaper devoted to photographs.
Etiquette sage Emily Post, who believed that behavior – not income – defined class, is quoted as saying in 1959: "It is impossible for a hatless woman to be chic." Hats can be worn to theaters or concerts, but people should remove them if they are blocking anyone's view.
And be careful when putting something on the hatband, by the way. Anything put on the band of a man's hat must be on the left side, and anything on a woman's hatband must be on the right.
Amy Vanderbilt gave women the choice about whether to wear hats to outdoor parties and weddings in her 1963 "New Complete Book of Etiquette." Women should keep their hats on in homes holding christenings, weddings and funerals, because in those occasions the house is treated as if it were a house of worship, she said. Women should not remove hats that go with dinner suits or dinner dresses throughout the evening.
Ladies in hats at the Kentucky Derby is a tradition that is probably as old as the Derby itself. From small and tasteful to large and frilly, you will see hats in all colors of the rainbow on women of all ages. Often they are together in groups and sometimes even the guys get into the act! Everyone enjoys the hat parade and the wearers are all glad to show them off.
I have included a couple of the hats I spotted at the Derby a few years back along with a couple of my favorites and some classics from yesteryear. Oh and to the Derby, I wore a wide brimmed black French straw with a black tulle band and tail. A few dried pink roses were underneath the tulle and it was designed by Isabella of St. Augustine Florida. And the hatpin is one of my favorite possessions. I hope this may give you some ideas for your own hat in the future.

I love hats! I don't wear them that often but I do love them! We have a Kentucky Derby party in my community and that is when all bets are off! You should see some of the creations. I learned a lot from this post. Thanks of the info!

Girl, you were stunning in that chapeau! I grew up hearing "Emily Post Says" so it's ingrained! We need manners to improve the quality of our life, being nice should never go out of fashion, don't you agree?

I so love hats on other people! Sadly, I am just not able to pull it off. My grandmother had a hat to match every suit! By the way, I grew up with Amy Vanderbuilt instead of Emily Post. Thanks for the pictures and Happy Easter!

I have always loved hats! I remember all ladies and girls wearing hats to church. My all time favorite was a beautiful wide brim white felt from the 1970's. Today, it's my "Texas Two Step" 5" Brim made of Guatemalan fine palm from SunbodyHats.com. Love the article! Hugs, Mumzie

My Mom always made me a dress and I had a pretty straw hat to wear on Easter. Thanks for bringing back those memories, also Mom would sing in her Easter Bonnet all the time!
I'll be working all through the Easter Holiday, marine dispatch. Have a wonderful weekend, hope my little bunny and friend arrives soon. Oh, I made a pattern of a lab dog, I used Senator as a model. Hope he will be part of my Summer Bug and Faerie Parade.

Great post and pictures, Libby... I love hats--but don't own but one now. I wore a hat to my son's weddings several years ago, and have that hat in a box in my closet. Maybe I'll find somewhere to wear it again.

Hugs,
Betsy

Libby,
This is such a fun post, which reminds me of when I lived in the United Arab Emirates. The Dubai World Cup was always one of the highlights of the year. My friends and I searched for the perfect over the top hat and dressy, dress! It was a fabulous all day affair, and a unique experience. I am always inspired when I stop by your blog. Your recipes are wonderful, and I enjoy viewing the events you cover. Wishing you a Happy Easter! ~Cathy~
