The White House Menu
Soup Course: Celery Soup
Appetizer: Wild Mushroom Crisps
Entree: Steelhead Salmon with Citrus sauce
Sides: Toasted Saffron Couscous Pearls, Crispy Spinach
Salad: Baby Iceberg Lettuce with Maytag Bleu Cheese and Yogurt Ranch Dressing
Dessert: Milk Chocolate Velvet Cake
When the President of the United States (POTUS) and the First Lady invite 200 guests to the White House for dinner, the staff makes it happen. The guests list, protocol, security, the menu, seating charts, place cards, menu cards, selection of patterns for china, silver and crystal, tablecloths, centerpieces, entertainment, receiving line, announcement of guests, military escorts, and the list goes on and on. Of course there’s the decision of what to wear. But since this wasn’t black tie, it was a little more relaxed.
Once guests accept their invitations, you are on THE LIST and it’s exciting knowing that you will be dining at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The scale of the home is awesome and the history that’s been made there can still you in your tracks. The First Lady, the Social Secretary, and her staff work with the chef, the florists, the stewards, the calligraphers, and others to make the evening seem so effortless.
Imagine entering the East Room where twenty tables of ten place settings were set. White roses and white peonies with green apples were the evening’s centerpieces. Tablecloths were pale blue damask and the Clinton White House China was selected. Music is playing in the background and you’ve just been introduced to and photographed with the President and First Lady. As you’re escorted to your table, you look down and there’s your name, beautifully calligraphered by hand on a place card with the official insignia in gold. Two hundred guests make it a select crowd. Really! That’s one hundred couples but remember there are Senators, Congressmen, Supreme Court Justices, Cabinet Members, and the Vice President whose numbers alone total over 600. I bet lots of small talk in this room led to big business and legislation which impacts the world.
Among those at the President and Michelle's table: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel(R-KY), Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA), Rep. James Clyburn(D-SC), and Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), chair of the Senate Finance Committee. Oh well, the Obama administration has many more parties to plan and who knows who will be at the next one. It might be you or someone you know.

Thanks for sharing. It sounds like a wonderful event-who wouldn't want to dine at the White House!
I'm sure my invitation is in the mail! I just love that you coordinate your music!!
Were you there? It sounds like you knew the details from first hand knowledge! I think that President and Michelle Obama would be fantastic table companions. I actually think I would be at ease with them! Your playlist is so varied, love it!
I've always admired White House tables -- they are so elegant and classy.
Gorgeous...I wonder if they'd share the mushroom crisp and chocolate cake recipes. Yummy! Was just watching the Obamas on the morning news as they charmed Queen Elizabeth. What a marvelous couple.
Love the Tablescape!
Your blog is beautiful!! and I love your Sous Chef! Thanks for visiting my blog, I look forward to returning to this one
I would just love to see this level of perfection in person!
Hi Libby,
Thanks so much for your nice comments.
I look forward to visiting Twirl & Taste and hearing about your wonderful menus and venues.
All the best.

Yes,who wouldn't want to eat there?Lovely...Ann
Wow, how awesome is that. My best friend received an invitation to the Clinton but he passed away before we could go. Yes, I might have been there. He was so excited he couldn't wait to tell me. I love visiting to find out more stories like this. You have been at some very interesting places.
Thank you for a peak into a White House "Dinner Party"! Lovely. I recently saw (on T.V.) the new china Mrs. Bush picked, but sadly did not have time to use. It was beautiful!
What an evening that would be. Maybe my invitation will come next. lol Hugs, Marty
Well that would be an amazing evening. Being a Canadian and not on the A list I don't think I will be getting an invitation.
However if the Obamas are free one night they are welcome to stop by my home for a fun and delicious dinner. I can even make a calligraphed place card for them. Parking may be a problem as I have heard they travel with a group.
I am so in the moment that I can taste the cake. Wait! Here comes Michelle over to my table & commented to me how she loves to read your blog and mine too:) Between courses we discussed important matters including how she keeps those arms in shape and what new fashions they have for the girls at JCrew kids. Thanks for letting me escape my reality of mac'n'cheese and ring dings for a few delighful minutes. Your post was AWESOME!

I love seeing grand tables like that in The White House, it makes you want to do one yourself. Lovely post, Libby!
I can't imagine dining at the White House. That would be a fabulous one of a lifetime experience.
Lovely!! So elegant~
Wow White House dining. I would love to be there next and would also love to do their table scapes. What fun and the menu sounds scrumptious.!
Libby, so glad I found your blog again, because I love everything in it! So now will follow it so I do not loose you again.
Wonderful experience, thank you for sharing the White House with us, plus other interesting things. Amazing!
And pet Senator for me! My father use to raise registered yellow labs for years, ours were very white like Senator looks.
Blessings from my castle,
Linda Q
Would be lovely to have had a place at that dining experience.
But I could sit and read a menu or cook book and still feel like aI was there enjoying each dish:)
The table looks fabulous, but the menu, ah the menu is one I could really enjoy. Nancy
Exquisite! From the flowers to the china and everything in between (and particularly your descriptions) are wonderful!
Thanks, Libby, for sharing...
XO,
Sheila :-)
