The magnolia trees are blooming in my yard and the fragrance is nothing less than sweetly intoxicating. Oh that scent is giddy, distinct and magical and it just transports me into another world – the land of Scarlett O’Hara where you could always think about things tomorrow. This time of year the blossoms measure 8 – 10 inches in diameter and this southern chic thinks it is a sin to cut down one of nature’s most majestic of trees.
I once had a fragrance created that of course included a touch of magnolia. The perfumist was a Southern lady with a mystique and a French accent to match. She had no doubt concocted hundreds of blends in her life and I stumbled upon her when I stepped into a boutique to avoid a spring downpour in the French Quarter of New Orleans. She was mixing before I ever opened my mouth with a bewitching smile as if to say, I can read your mind honey.
And she did, Libby is a mixture of jasmine, gardenia, tuberose, magnolia and a few other surprise notes. I love it as much today as I did the day I waltzed into a wedding reception wearing my new perfume and someone said, I love that fragrance, what is it? I almost flipped. I felt like I had arrived.
"Perfume is the unseen but unforgettable and ultimate fashion accessory. It heralds a woman’s arrival and prolongs her departure." Coco Chanel
Fragrances, like music, are created with notes. The first step in creating an original perfume is selection of aromatic notes in elemental blends that match your moods and promote your passions. The second step is deciding on a combination and concentration of blends in your fragrance. I remember relaxing on a sleeping couch as she mixed and sniffed and touched base notes to my arm and wrist. As we are all different, the fragrance reacts with everyone’s own body chemistry to evoke slightly different smells.
Your personal scent is a powerful accessory, a fragrance only you wear because you designed it yourself. Once you get the perfect combination, the secret formula is registered and you will always be able to re-order. It was a cool thing to do then and I still think it’s cool. Libby smells a lot like Tiare by Chantecaille or Tubereuse Indiana Perfume by Creed. It’s a simple, yet a beautiful floral, feminine twirling fragrance – your signature floating in the air.

What a great topic...I luv to sniff sniff!!! CHEERS! Michele
I would love to have a tree. I know our neighbor has one and it's so beautiful.
What a beautiful photo of the Magnolia blossom. They are such a full rich blossom...
Happy O.W. to you!
Oh... if only I could get the secret formula of an old favorite perfume that is no longer being manufactured... I'd pay just about anything to have it made again. And yes, perfumes indeed smell different after mingling with an individuals body chemistry. So fascinating!
Gorgeous magnolia photo!!
Oh it's just beautiful Libby and too funny I have one on my post already scheduled for tomorrows wordless Wednesday. Great Minds huh.. and oh that smell is intoxicating for sure I can smell them all over the place here too.
Libby, not only is that a beautiful photo, but that is fascinating about your private scent! Can any perfumist make it, or do you have to reorder from the lady in the French Quarter? I would be interested in having one made for me, too... though I must confess I have been in love with a scent calle Vera Wang by Vera Wang. You will love this... a friend of mine didn't know I was home and saw my garage door open with a different car in it (mine was in the shop). She said she knew it was me when she smelled my perfume, that she didn't think a burglar would be wearing such an expensive scent. And it does smell expensive. But it also smells clean and fresh. I'm actually pretty pleased with it. I would be interested to see what flowers compose the mixture.
Happy Outdoor Wednesday, Ms. Twirls! :-)
XO,
Sheila
I have a magnolia tree. Ilove it but the blossoms come and go so quickly. Love your pictures. Happy ODW
Oh how beautiful! I just showed your pic to my hubby:) I've wanted magnolia trees for a while now.
Blessings,
Sandra
I love the smell of magnolia blossoms, Libby. When I was working in Texas, I'd go by the park and cut a magnolia bloom from the tree there and take it back to my office... OH---it smelled so good.
Thanks for a great post!!! I would love perfume with magnolia, gardenia and jasmine in it... Wow!!!!
Hugs,
Betsy
I enjoyed your post. The story was sweet, like the fragrance. You write very well. Thanks for sharing.
Libby,
Wonderful!!! I am a perfume nut!!! I could spend hours at NM shopping for fragrances!!! You are so lucky to have your own!!! How decadent!!!
Happy Outdoor Wednesday!!!
XOXO

Happy Outdoor Wednesday Libby! You are right... magnolias are intoxicating! Thanks for sharing your photo.~ Susan
Oh, I love that you had a fragrance made for you. That would be the ultimate accessory! I think a woman's perfume and a man's cologne leave a memory-you can never smell it again without the scent transporting you back to a good time with that person. I would be curious too, if you had to go back to that woman/shop or how that would work. I love the smell of gardenia too. Wonderful post!
We have a magnolia tree in our front yard, and I'm very much looking forward to when it blooms. I think we missed out this year, but next year . . . perhaps.
Libby, my mix would be similar to yours, only it would be the Philippine jasmine, gardenia, magnolia, white rose, orchids and a hint of ylang-ylang. Mmmm... I can smell it and I am loving it!
Thanks for sharing your magnolias with us!
Happy OW!
Love magnolias. I had some perfume made for me when living in Cairo and used sandalwood as its base. Loved that stuff.
What fun to have your own fragrance.
The Raggedy Girl
Love the magnolia, alas, that is one thing I don't have in my yard.
Love your story about your personal fragrance.
Okay, you must be a wonderful writer because I am ready to go out and have my own perfume created by this fantastic lady!! After all, New Orleans is only a couple of states away. What a great story!! Love it.
And the magnolias? I have some too. Gorgeous.
Thank you for letting me visit, I love your blog.
Jennifer
What a lovely post -the picture and the words. Have a wonderful day.
Well, bless your heart for posting this lovely magnolia blossom!
I love magnolia trees. Not to far from here is a street where almost every home has one in their front yard and during the day, the scent is just yummy!
My Magnolias are blooming too. So majestic and southern... :)
Hi libby I'm back. Wow I think I'm going to participate on this one. Your magnolia looks so sweet.
We have magnolia trees in CA, but I think their fragrance is dampened down by the smell of smog and salt water.
I love the idea of a personal perfume. I think mine would have a hint of laundry detergent, the light scent of peanut butter, crayon and baseball gloves, and just a hint of citrus. (Cuz' we do need to have something in there that mommy actually likes...)
Nothing says "Southern" like magnolias bloomin!
The picture of the magnolia is beautiful. I've never smelled one, is it anything like a gardenia? Someday I am going to have to make a trip to the south to experience all these trasures.
I am more of a spicy fragrance. Patchouli, sandlewood, that sort of scent. Why is it the women who wear the cheap perfumes slap on so darn much of the stuff that you can hardly breathe? Because it's cheap that' why.
Yours sounds very fresh.
Libby,
This sounds like such an interesting process (and the mysterious French lady even more interesting!). I am surprised sometimes when I read in a magazine what a perfume I enjoy is made up of or how it is classified (floral, musky...). I don't see myself in these categories, yet I like the scent!
Have you been wearing Libby long?? I usually find a scent and wear it about 3 years, sometimes more, sometimes less. I recently detached myself from Donna Karan Cashmere Mist, rather reluctantly, but I started to smell it everywhere. (Maybe I really DO need a signature scent!!) Now I am wearing Coco Mademoiselle. Very soft with a little punch of something! And for my birthday, my husband bought me Flower Bomb by Victor Rolf. He loves salesladies. And not in THAT way! He really likes to pick their minds... see if they know their stuff. He wants that female perspective before he buys me something. So all the girls at Macy's were saying Flower Bomb was the IT perfume of the season. Well, I love it. It is fabulous and it laaaaasts! But shhh! It's our secret! ;=)
xoxo

Well hon, it's good to know "when you have arrived." A lady has got to have that feeling at some point in her life, or she just hasn't lived yet!
Brenda
Oh how I dearly love a magnolia (even named my cat Magnolia!) When we "go home" each summer I love it when we manage to make it early enough that the blooms are still open.
Also love perfume. Great post!
Oh, Magnolias! Reminds me of 2 fine old trees that shaded a grand old front porch and balcony. Where the limbs just tempted you to reach out and climb them. How many times did you yield to that temptation and reach over and grab hold of that branch? I did once and SOMEBODY told on me! I had to climb from the ground after that but, I dearly loved those trees and those blossoms. BTW, Grandma told me I had to count the blossoms before I could get off the porch. At least, I didn't have to pick up those mulberries!
Nothing says Southern like a bit ole Magnolia Bloom!
Come spring I sit just waiting for the magnolias to bloom and your description of the smell just lifts me to the nearest magnolia tree. It's just too bad they only last such a short while and make such a mess of the yard.
I was just noticing the Magnolia Trees in my neighborhood yesterday!
Hi Libby,
Well...I love this idea! Except, I'm so fickle about perfume...I'd have to have a new scent every few years. :-) Aren't magnolia trees just so Southern and soooo wonderful...we are so blessed to have them here in the south! Susan
