Elvis' Grandchildren Slice the Birthday Cake Celebrating Elvis 75th Birthday in Memphis

The musical legacy and 75th birthday of Elvis Presley was celebrated over four days in his hometown of Memphis. The tribute to the King on January 8, 2010 included a proclamation of Elvis Presley Day and a birthday cake cutting with special guests Lisa Marie and Priscilla Presley along with Elvis’ grandchildren, Riley and Benjamin Keough, who cut the five-tier cake. This will kick off a yearlong birthday party complete with new exhibits at Graceland. Priscilla reminisced that Elvis was always true to his music and if he were alive today, he might be into more gospel than rock and roll or even teaching or doing a little preaching.

From his birth place in Tupelo to his home at Graceland, fans, family and friends gathered for this milestone. Impersonators sang; the Memphis Grizzlies wore blue suede shoes for their 2010 Elvis Birthday Night at the FedEx Forum; and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra presented Elvis Birthday Pops with members of the TLC Band as special guests. Also included was: the release of ELVIS 75; book signings with George Klein and Frank Hyland; a private evening tour of the Graceland decked out in holiday splendor; the fan clubs’ Birthday Bash on Beale Street; Elvis Imperial’s southern gospel concert; dance parties; forums; and numerous benefits and tributes. Elvis classics streamed from radio and television stations in Memphis and around the globe in tribute to the world’s greatest entertainer.

Frigid temperatures moved the birthday cake and coffee reception with the Presley family from the lawn of Graceland to a restaurant across the street from the mansion. Even harsh winds and single digit temperatures didn’t keep the legions of fans away from paying homage. Approximately 3,000, many from around the world, braved the weather to sing Happy Birthday to the King. I bet it was a rock and roll day in heaven – just imagine the harmony with Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, J.D. Sumner and the like. His legacy lives on 33 years after his death.

I could so believe if Elvis was still with us today he would be preaching. I've always been a fan and hope to make it to Graceland one day.

I always find it hard to believe that he is gone. Wow 75. Seems like yesterday I saw him on TV. That was one big cake to celebrate.

His grandson looks so much like him, Libby! Oh, I miss Elvis. He was such a fine person and so talented. I'm sorry he didn't live long enough to see those precious grandkids. But what a legacy he left us all with his beautiful voice, recordings, and movies.

Happy Birthday, Elvis!

XO,

Sheila... whose favorite Elvis song is playing on here! :-)

I love that they are making this celebration a year long event. It's hard to see his grandaughter's face, but she appears to really favor her mother. And thanks so much for visiting Kathysue's new blog - you are going to love her! Kathy

Hi Libby, It's hard to believe that Elvis would be 75 yrs. old now.. Where does time go?????

I remember him well--since I was a teen when he was so popular. He has some nice-looking grandchildren. Are there any budding musicians in the family????

Stay warm during this frigid weather.
Hugs,
Betsy

Happy Birthady to the ONE and ONLY king of Rock and Roll.
We grew up with your music and the love of rock and roll was passed on to my son...Young or old your music will live on forever!
To the Presley family God Bless.

Hi there Libby! It's been ages since I've got to visit...I'm so glad I found this post when visiting. :) I grew up on Elvis as the younger sister of the teenagers in the house and I was smitten at the age of 6. I still adore his music and his memory. My sisters and I took my mother on her 75th to Memphis to see all the Elvis memorabilia and we adored Graceland. What a fun share today...and one that I really enjoyed. Wouldn't he be proud of these gorgeous and precious grandchildren of Lisa's? Thanks Libby! ~CC Catherine
