Devil’s Food Cake with Fudge Icing, Lawsy Have Mercy it's so good the devil must have stole this recipe!
Lawsy mercy, brothers and sisters, you're no sinner if you like this DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE - the temptation is beyond worldly resistance. Surely this recipe came from Heaven and the Devil stole it for his own. The icing tastes like old-fashioned beaten fudge. You'll never let that boxed stuff cross your lips, ever again!
1/2 cup shortening or butter
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup sugar
4 eggs, well beaten
1 cup buttermilk
3 cups sifted flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup boiling water
4 squares unsweetened chocolate
2 teaspoons soda
Melt chocolate; add boiling water mixing – add soda and stir until mixture is thick. Set aside to cool while mixing cake. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add beaten eggs and mix well. Add flour (sifted with baking powder and salt) and milk. Stir after each has been added until smooth. Add chocolate mixture and vanilla. Bake in 350 degree oven for 25 minutes in two round or square cake pans.
2 cups sugar
1 stick butter
3 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 cup milk
Mix well in medium sauce pan and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Boil for one minute, remove from heat and allow to cool to a spreading consistency. Beat either by hand or with a mixer as it cools. Ice the cake. Mary Alice Sain, Jackson, TN
Mary Alice helped my parents raise me and calls me her baby. She was there when my parents, John and Josephine Murphy brought their first born home from the hospital a few days after Thanksgiving and I’ve loved her ever since. She has taught me many things in life, including how to fry chicken and make the best cakes on earth!
